A group of hackers that ironically call themselves “The Guardians of Peace” has the cyber world on edge as of late; recently the FBI has issued a warning about a new form of highly destructive malware that has run amok, and fingers being are pointed at the GOP hacker group. The new malware performs an irreversible shut down on computers, rendering their data irrecoverable. Although there is no real evidence that the so-called Guardians of Peace were involved, they have become quite infamous due to their previous attack on Sony. During the attack, the computers of Sony’s film studio were compromised, leading to internet leaks of recent films such as Annie and Fury featuring Brad Pitt. GOP had also taken over some of Sony’s Twitter accounts, and leaked other sensitive data. The studio was completely shut down for about three weeks.
The FBI did not release any details on the victims of the new malware, but as a public service issues “flash” warnings to keep businesses up to date on high risk cyber threats.
