Product Preview – Zuta Mobile Printer
The 2015 International CES is usually chock full of surprises, this one here taking the form of a mobile printer – as in literally mobile – it prints by moving itself across the page. The printer is super compact and easy to use – connect to it via WiFi, and print anything from your computer, tablet or smartphone. To print, simply align the Zuta with paper by placing it at the top left corner of the page. Once there, just press print as usual, and watch it quietly groove along the paper as it prints out the totality of your document. It’s a rather strange sight, but at the same time its almost like having a personal robot secretary.
The creator of the printer,Tuvia Elbaum, says the idea came to him after constantly working on the go – with cellphones, laptops, and tablets – and never having a quick and portable way to print.
“When I went online to look for a portable printer, I only found printers that are either too big to really carry around or too small to print on a standard A4 page,” says Elbaum. “I noticed that all the printers had to have the paper feed through the device, so I thought why not put the cartridge on a robot and let it run around by itself, and that will allow the printer to be really small and yet print on any size paper?”
“We’ve had many prototypes and thoughts,” he says. “From using rails, that come out of the robot and help with stabilizing the paper, to having the robot hover over the paper. Some ideas didn’t come out that well, but it helped us focus towards our design today and each revision was based on the lessons learned from the ones that came before it. Thank God for 3D printers!”
It uses a proprietary ink cartridge, but the company is still working at making it more efficient. The Zuta is currently available for preorder for $199, and will go up to $250 once its out on the shelves.
